2) PLAN
CAL FIRE provides the basic steps for evacuation readiness on their site. Key steps include:
plan alternate escape routes and practice any that are not familiar
know possible safe havens for sheltering if needed
designate out-of-area meet-up locations for your family
make a family communication plan with designated out-of-area contacts
have a go-kit packed and ready, and know what other items are your top priorities to take
understand how to get your house ready by, e.g., turning off the gas and moving flammable items away from doors and windows.
We recommend using this handy checklist for getting ready. Even better, start with a generic list and then develop your own very specific list that includes where to find key items such as your most important photos. Keep that list posted in an easy-to-find location.
If you have pets or livestock, you should plan for their safety as well. The Halter Project is a great resource for learning about this. You can also listen to our February 23, 2021 radio show with representatives from The Halter Project and Mendocino County Animal Care Services.
