Win a Metal Gate in our “Most Dangerous Gate Contest”
We’re on a mission to identify the most hazardous fence-to-home connections out there. Would yours qualify? Snap a photo and send it our way. If yours wins the contest, we’ll collaborate with you on a replacement gate or fence section that’s both fire-safe and stylish. And the best part? We will pay for it. All we ask is that you provide before-and-after photos to showcase your epic upgrade.
Submit your photo by emailing it to king@firesafemendocino.org, texting it to 707-518-3088, or posting it on our Facebook page with #DangerousGateMakeover. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis until September 1.
Here are some fence-safety tips:
Your home can be protected by a non-flammable gap at least five feet wide between your home and any wooden fence or gate. A metal or other nonflammable gate or fence section is a great wildfire-safety improvement.
Clearing weeds, grasses, and other flammable materials around any wooden fence will reduce the chance that it will catch fire.
If you happen to be home when there is a wildfire in the area, and if you have time before evacuating, open any wooden gates that connected to your home, to break that connection.
For more home-hardening tips, we have a great video series that walks through steps you can take – see button below.
