Win a Metal Gate in our “Most Dangerous Gate Contest”

Wooden fences and gates, once considered innocuous, can act as kindling in a wildfire: if they connect to your house, they can act as a fuse carrying the fire directly to your home.

But fear not – we are pleased to introduce MCFSC’s “Most Dangerous Gate” makeover contest. If yours is chosen as the most dangerous one submitted, you will win a metal (or other nonflammable) gate makeover to replace the gate or section of fence that connects to your house!

We’re on a mission to identify the most hazardous fence-to-home connections out there. Would yours qualify? Snap a photo and send it our way. If yours wins the contest, we’ll collaborate with you on a replacement gate or fence section that’s both fire-safe and stylish. And the best part? We will pay for it. All we ask is that you provide before-and-after photos to showcase your epic upgrade.

Submit your photo by emailing it to king@firesafemendocino.org, texting it to 707-518-3088, or posting it on our Facebook page with #DangerousGateMakeover. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis until September 1.

Here are some fence-safety tips:

  • Your home can be protected by a non-flammable gap at least five feet wide between your home and any wooden fence or gate. A metal or other nonflammable gate or fence section is a great wildfire-safety improvement.

  • Clearing weeds, grasses, and other flammable materials around any wooden fence will reduce the chance that it will catch fire.

  • If you happen to be home when there is a wildfire in the area, and if you have time before evacuating, open any wooden gates that connected to your home, to break that connection.

  • For more home-hardening tips, we have a great video series that walks through steps you can take – see button below.
